Book Review: Mutual Funds - The Money Multiplier

I am very appreciative of the author's lucid style of explaining the esoteric topic of Mutual Funds in a way beginners can quickly ramp-up to investment jargons that should aid in their investment decisions and journey in Mutual Funds. Consider it a text book for every Mutual Fund investor to read at least once before investing their money in Mutual Funds, India market in particular.

What I like and think is unique about this book

  • Mutual Funds jargons in general and how some are India centric caught my interest (check out Mutual Fund Structure section to learn how an entity is investment company in US but is just Mutual Fund / Unit Trust in India)
  • Debunking popular myths on NAV, Dividends, etc in Mutual Funds is so insightful and wonderfully explained (Special thanks to the author for the section titled "Myths Exploded.."). Here is one such teaser, "Do you know that dividends in MF is fundamentally is not the same as dividends in equity?".
  • Tips and warnings on various things like NAVs, NFO, Dividends, Benchmarking MF performance, etc are some of the must learn lessons for better investment decisions.
  • Brain friendly guide to Mutual Funds with illustrative examples
  • Giving context of how SEBI, the regulator body in India is taking measures constantly to protect the interest of investors is so invaluable to better appreciate the investment landscape in India.
  • Zebras, Donkeys and Horses may belong to the Equus family but are very different. Similarly Index Funds in every nation - US, India and elsewhere - while by definition and function the same, their performances aren't. So heading an advice on this from a US author to apply in Indian context is likely to disappoint you. I was amazed to learn this from this book.

What I think needs improvement in the book:

  • From the time of its writing (2016-17), the regulations in MF has changed quite a bit and the book sections talking about it should reflect current reality for the benefit of its readers.

Get your copy and profit from author's rich experiences in this subject as a novice investor exploring MF. Kindle version of the book is cheaper than the price of a coffee in Starbucks.
